Mark 12:41 And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much. And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. And he called his disciples to him, and said to them, "Truly I say to you, that this poor widow has cast more in, than all they who have cast into the treasury: for all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living".
The value of a mite or a lepta (a small copper coin pictured here) is of very small value. Based on the penny or denarius a day labourers wage parable (Matthew 20:2) , a mite was half a quadron (Mark 12:42), there are 64 quadrons to a denarius (Augustan Values) so 2 mites is 1/64th of a days wage. Considering that the labouring day was 12 hours, 1/64 of 12 hours is 11.25 minutes work. In New Zealand at $24.00 per hour this equates to about $4.50 about equivalent to one loaf of bread. (ref- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_coins) This Website is my acknowledgement of the good things God has given me in my search to know Him, and the power of his resurrection. In the blog you will find a range of things, poems, memories, meditations, studies and stories - mostly originals- written to encourage others along their path. If God has blessed you and you would like to 'acknowledge every good thing', I would encourage you to share it with the "two or three" and place it in their treasury, and let God give the increase. (1 Corinthians 3:7) Being vulnerable, stepping outside the comfort zone, acknowledging the working of God in your life, may be hard at first, but God will bless your efforts, as you sanctify Him to others. So throw your pieces into a treasury... you do not know what God will do with them!
