Lest I Forget

Lord I have not considered myself greatNor taken things to myself greater than I amI have not considered myself Special or of some valueWithout you I am like chaff driven by the windI know that in my flesh dwells nothing goodMy whole body is putrefying, a mass of septic soresI have washed myself in fetid water; I have tried to be righteousIn my religiosity and fervour I have cut off many peoples earsThere is nothing in myself that I can hold aloft and say this is of valueEven the gifts I am born with are contaminated and worthlessLord I am not presumptuous; I cannot offer you anythingI cannot do anything, go anyplace, or say anythingWithout it being sinful in your sight
Yet You have washed me, given Yourself in my placeTaken upon Yourself my punishment, the beatings meant for meYou have bound up my wounds and poured in oil and wineAnd have paid for someone to nurse me back to healthYou have deigned to call me your friend and have treated me as a long lost brotherYou have gathered me into your presence and cradled me in your armsYou have given me a clean robe and shoes on my feetPut a ring on my finger, the token of son-ship on my lifeYou have made a special feast for me, to celebrate my returnI am called your beloved, and You have given me a place at your sideYour grace has dazzled me; Your love has enveloped me with lightLet me see occasionally what I was, lest I be lifted up with pride,And forget that YOU dug me from the pit; YOU gave me LIFE.
